Gamble Game With Students Career at Stake

Right from the age of epics, in a game of politics,we know a lot of things can come to stake in gamble board. The most recent one being the BE aspirants in the political game of Tamilnadu. The facts says there are about 266 Engineering colleges in Tamilnadu with the total number of BE/BTech seats stood at 100175. Of these 62337 are supposed to come under the single window counselling system conducted by Anna University. About 84000 aspirants have applied for these seats.

Peeking at the background that leads to the chaos; DMK came to throne with vows to help the poor in a better way. One way they did was to abolish the entrance exams. The process of abrogating the entrance system had actually begun during the AIADMK regime but was stayed by court considering to the last minute desperate announcement to abolish Entrance by the then AIADMK Government. DMK went on to demolish the entrance process that was being practiced effectively and successfully over the years. The reason being entrance was holding up the fair chance the poor would get to compete. A good one to resist. But did they get through? The private colleges on the other hand were making money through the few management seats they had and were looking for a chance to improve their monetary health. DMK ministry failed to maintain the agreement with the self financing colleges to surrender the seats for 2007 with they had agreed for the year 2006. The year 2006 in fact saw a lot of engineering seats unfilled as parents of the students had rightly judged the infrastructure of many colleges as inappropriate. Blame the colleges or the committee that approves them, it must have hurt the college management reasonably.

The unsuspecting parents filed there application for TNEA 2007 counselling aspiring a good future for there students. The self financing colleges went on to fill their BE seats at their will. When the time came for counselling, the self financing colleges filed a case with high court. The court judged the government's rule as inappropriate and that the agreement does not hold good for 2007 but advised to follow the 2006 process for this year too. There was a similar situation going on for the medical seats. But in case of a minority medical institute, the court had a verdict in favour of the medical college. This verdict kind of encouraged the self financing engineering colleges to go for an appeal in the supreme court.

Now that the TNEA counselling has been happening for the BE seats from 18th of July, the petition was brought to Supreme courts attention few days after the mainstream counselling. The private colleges argue that when its all their investment in their institution why bargain for a poorer deal with govt when the students are ready to pay what they demand. The supreme court bench has commented to the private colleges that what's happening right now in TNEA counselling is not actual admission has the next hearing on 30th July by then the exciting part of the counselling would have been completed. This has left the parents confusing as selecting a college and department in TNEA counselling is considered a seat confirmed in the college and Anna university used to collect a DD as part of confirmation process to be deducted on actual college opening day at the respective colleges. Now that DMK is in fire by AIADMK and PMK, DMK has initiated a series of raid on a few self financing colleges accusing complaints of excessive fees. It looks like a bossy revenge act by the government.

DMK government has failed miserably in the department of higher education. Also it has failed to maintain its vow of guaranteeing the poor the value they deserved. Its a betrayal on govt's part. 226 engineering colleges under its state banner not accounting the deemed universities. Few colleges have already started the courses, as usual the government dependent colleges will start late this year too. Education has surely become a business in a state which raised a professor to become the first ever first citizen of India. When a similar concept of business in educational institution has been featured in the recent record hit movie Sivaji starring Super star Rajini, the people in Tamilnadu are in need of a real Sivaji.
